Thank you all for your continued engagement in the Coalition. Seventeen people attended the Vermont Suicide Prevention Coalition (VTSPC) meeting that was held virtually on September 10, 2020, World Suicide Prevention Day. We had representatives from the following organizations and agencies: Department for Mental Health, UVM College of Medicine, National Alliance on Mental Health VT, Vermont Department of Health, Department of Veterans Affairs, Vermont Federation of Families for Children’s Mental Health, Department of Veterans Affairs, Support and Services at Home, and PATHWAYS VT. People with lived experience and private practice clinicians attended as well.

Melissa Farr, Program Specialist and JoEllen Tarallo, Executive Director, Center for Health and Learning, opened the meeting. JoEllen opened the meeting and shared the Voices of Vermont Stakeholders for Suicide Prevention video. The video was created through asking an open ended question to those who represent various views, perspectives, and points of view on suicide prevention in Vermont. In the meeting, we asked attendees to assist in identifying policy issues that were talked about in the video. Other stakeholders are being sought and will be included in the video. We very much consider this a work in progress. That includes faith leaders, people with disabilities, etc.

Voices of Vermont Stakeholders

Beth Shrader, Senior Program Specialist, CHL, shared evaluation results from the Vermont Suicide Prevention Symposium that was held on August 18, 2020. Very good to excellent reviews were given for overall experience as well as for the sessions. Members were asked, How did your attendance lead to any next steps for you personally, professionally and/or in your organization? Materials online will be available on Sept 14, 2020. You can still register for sessions and engage with the content.

Alison Krompf, Director of Quality Assurance, DMH and Daisy Berbeco, Senior Policy Analyst, DMH provided an update on the current state of suicide prevention in Vermont, which also included how Coalition member feedback from Fall 2019 is incorporated into their work and ongoing initiatives. They also shared new funding received in the form of COVID Relief Suicide Prevention.

New funding received will support

  • Expand Zero Suicide
  • Expand Suicide Prevention Lifeline
  • Develop Targeted Resources for at Risk Groups
  • Support Youth Mental Health First Aid
  • Support Elder Outreach

Caitlin Jelinek, Health Analyst, Vermont Department of Health, shared an update on the Suicide Prevention Data and Surveillance Report.

Peer support in Vermont:Laurie Emerson, Executive Director, NAMI-VT presented on the work of those doing peer support, how they very much support those in recovery, and how members can find more resources. We also shared lessons learned about peer recovery from planning the symposium and work that CHL is doing to respond. We will be inviting peer support organizations to join us at these meetings moving forward and talk about their work and share resources and challenges. The importance of Umatter Gatekeeper training for all Peer Support Workers was also noted.

Also, a couple reminders for members.  Zero Suicide and Umatter Webinars are being offered monthly. The Vermont Suicide Prevention Symposium, Bringing Resiliency Into Focus, was held on August 18, 2020 and you can still purchase registration to access the sessions,
