Decolonizing Suicide Prevention
January 17, 2024 from 12:00 pm – 1:00 pm
There is no cost to attend this training.
About this training:
This presentation will define decolonization within mental health and further in suicide prevention, how this can better support populations of color and immigrant populations, and how this concept is perpetuated by systems, beginning with the history of mental health and suicide prevention. Participants will recognize elements of colonization in mental health systems and can begin to advocate for culturally informed practices. This presentation will support cultural competency and cultural sensitivity to bring awareness on where individuals needing support may be struggling and will address participants’ potential bias. Participants will need to be prepared to discuss sensitive topics such as slavery and colonist practices throughout history.
Objectives:
- Define decolonization and recognize colonized practices.
- Deconstruct systemically racist practices and work towards equitable support.
- Understand the racist history of mental health and suicide prevention.
- Address potential implicit bias.
