About this training:
This presentation will inform participants about the age-related factors and
considerations to understand the scope of suicide among older Vermonters,
what is needed to improve identification of older adults with suicide ideation,
and what approach and services can help this population cope with the
challenges of aging and be able to live in dignity until a natural death.
Objectives:
- Understand the prevalence of suicide among older adults
- Understand the age-related factors associated with suicide and suicide ideation in older adults
- Be informed about what is needed to reduce suicides in this population and what is needed to help older adults
About the Trainer
Charles Gurney, (he/him)
Charles Gurney, LICSW and retired LADC, is employed in the Vermont
Department of Health and Department of Disabilities, Aging and Independent
Living, in the Division of Substance Use Programs and in the Division of Adult
Services, State Unit on Aging. For the last eight years Mr. Gurney has been an
active member of the Vermont Suicide Prevent Coalition representing the needs
of older adults. He has over fifty years’ experience in the fields of mental health
and substance use services. He graduated from Bowdoin College and the
University of Washington, earning a BA and MSW.
