Understanding Suicide

VT Suicide Prevention Center (VTSPC) promotes public and well informed conversation about suicide prevention in Vermont. There is a pressing need to understand the prevalence of suicide as a public health problem and that there are effective approaches to preventing it.
Veterans and Suicide

Over 42,000 deaths by suicide occur in the United States each year and 18% of those are Veterans while Veterans constitute only 8.5% of the US population. An average of 20 Veterans died by suicide each day and 6 of those 20 were users of VA health care services.

Vermont Resources Packet
The VTSPC, American Foundation of Suicide Prevention, Vermont Department of Health, and Vermont Department of Mental Health collaborated and created a Survivors of Suicide Vermont Resource Packet which includes local and national resources, including local support groups.

Suicide is an event that impacts entire communities. People exposed to a suicide include not just the family and friends, but also first responders, those who discovered the suicide, health care workers and people in the schools, communities and workplaces where the families and friends live and work.

The Vermont Crisis Text Line connects individuals with professional help through a free, 24/7 text support line. This free texting service is available to anyone, at any time, for any type of crisis they are experiencing. Text VT to 741741 from anywhere – and you will receive an automated text response, followed by a response from a live Crisis Counselor.

Zero Suicide, a key concept of the National Strategy for Suicide Prevention, 2012, is a coordinated systems approach to suicide prevention, with the belief that suicide deaths for individuals under care within health and mental health systems are preventable. Zero Suicide starts with leadership commitment to examine suicide prevention and treatment across the organization.
